HIPAA Compliance for AI Agents
HIPAA's Security Rule and Privacy Rule apply when AI agents operate in environments where they can access Protected Health Information (PHI) — directly or indirectly. EMET provides the audit controls and monitoring capabilities that HIPAA requires for electronic PHI (ePHI) in the context of AI-assisted operations.
EMET addresses key HIPAA requirements:
- Administrative Safeguards (164.308) — Risk analysis support for AI access vectors, information system activity review through searchable audit logs, security incident procedures with structured alert workflows
- Technical Safeguards (164.312) — Audit controls recording every file access, command execution, and data operation by AI agents; Cryptographic integrity on all events; person/entity authentication for dashboard and sensor access; TLS 1.3 transmission security
- Audit Controls (164.312(b)) — The most direct HIPAA requirement EMET addresses: a complete record of every file the AI read, every command it executed, and every file it created or modified
Practical HIPAA controls supported:
- Custom security rules for PHI-adjacent file path monitoring
- Database schema access tracking when AI reads migration files or PHI table definitions
- Periodic AI activity review with filtered exports (CSV/JSON)
- Breach investigation support with complete session timelines and event correlation
- Minimum Necessary standard enforcement through the policy engine
